Dream job ahead with a decent income? Only with the right attitude, skills and a professional job application

Dream job ahead with a decent income?

Only with the right attitude, skills and a professional job application

It's been a while since there was a guest blog writer on this blog, but here is a new read about; how to land your "Dream job ahead with a decent income? Only with the right attitude, skills and a professional job application"!

Andreas Ott took his PADI IDC back in April 2015 in Khao Lak, Thailand with me in conjunction with PADI 5* IDC Center 'Sea Dragon'. Together with five other candidates he took and succeeded in his goal to become a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor.

Life after the PADI IDC took him on an interesting ride through South East Asia and he is now in a next phase of his dive career, after having been among other a cruise director in Indonesia.

We have kind of stayed in touch after his IDC and here he is, with a guest blog post on how to land your "Dream job ahead with a decent income? Only with the right attitude, skills and a professional job application".

Check out his website Scubareer dot net and enjoy the article;

"Dream job ahead with a decent income? Only with the right attitude, skills and a professional job application".

Have you been struggling to find your dive jobs? Are you even on a hunt for your very first dive job ever?
For me, after becoming a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor opportunities seemed to be far away because the competition was huge. I learned a range of very useful tricks from other dive pros and dive shop owners on how to get a great dive job.
Over the last years, I managed to work as a divemaster, dive instructor, retail seller, liveaboard cruise director and marketing manager.
Today I share with you some tips on how to create a good impression that helps you to stick out and land your dream job in the diving industry. But first I have a few tips on how to make a little extra money on the side.

Komodo National Park

A divemaster needs some extra cash

I loved it as a divemaster for two seasons. Most of the time on a liveaboard, diving, guiding, Fish-ID with guests, some briefings and the parties after each trip. Can somebody ask for anything more?
Yes, a decent income. As a divemaster, I did not have that.

Tip #1 Sell stuff

We need to face it. We are in the sales industry. Did somebody tell you to become a dive professional and live from the love for the ocean? Well, good luck filling your fridge.

I learned over time and with some experience from other dive pros how to create a decent pocket money on the side while working as a divemaster or instructor. There are different ways how to do this.

• Support a local business and offer their artisan products to your diving guests
• Create your own dive tribe and get commission for bringing your guests to the dive shop
• Offer dive courses to guests
• Offer dive equipment to guests

First instructor gig

After two seasons as a divemaster, I became a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor with Camille in Thailand.
Then I moved to Cairns in Australia right at the Great Barrier Reef.
Of course, I struggled to find my first job as an instructor. I did not even get an answer from a few dive shops. It was frustrating.
Then I got a tip from an old dive buddy from my time as divemaster:

Tip #2 Find more available dive jobs

I checked more websites for available positions. Now you can find a list of links of the most popular websites in his Facebook group. Make sure you check different platforms since some dive companies only publish on very few websites.
By checking more websites showing available jobs I was able to find more opportunities.
Take your time reading job descriptions thoroughly. 'Read between the lines’.

Tip #3 Sort out your CV

Everybody has what I had at that time. I needed to stick out of all the other applicants. How?

I wanted to know from the employers what they need from their potential staff. I started to understand better what is important for employers after talking to a range of dive shop owners.

After I got my CV sorted out I landed my first employment. I was the junior instructor at one of the largest certifying companies in the world. Legitimate Visa and work permit, good pay and a fantastic team. It felt wonderful after starting off with a tough struggle.

Next job

After almost one year in Australia, I wanted to get a job on land for a dive operator and go diving occasionally. It had been almost three years on boats and I missed on-land life.
A luxury liveaboard company in the Komodo National Park of Indonesia was looking for a marketing manager with liveaboard experience.
I did not have personal connections in this part of the world but this time I knew

• Where to find jobs
• How to prepare a good CV

Tip #4 Prepare for the job interview

I got invited for a job interview which made me feel really excited. I had not much time to practice so I asked my friends how to prepare a job interview well.

I have put together some tips on how to be ready for a job interview via internet phone call:

• Good internet connection
• Headphones
• Paper and pen
• Fully charged battery of laptop or phone
• Optimally plugged into a wall socket - a phone is empty quickly
• The job-ad to refer to it
• The website of the dive shop open on your computer or phone
• As much info as you can find about the company via internet or friends
• Silent environment
• Not look like you come back from a three-day full moon party
• Good light so they can see

Dream job ahead with a decent income? Only with the right attitude, skills and a professional job application

 Preparing for the job interview

The job interview went well and I got the job!

For almost one year I was in Indonesia, living in Bali and every eight weeks on a plane to Komodo. I got trained to the dive sites, the twelve crew, the language, logistics, boat accounting and the service level.

It was a very challenging year but I am really happy and grateful I have this work experience.

From the other perspective

When I was in the manager position I was the one reading many applications from diving professionals seeking for employment.
The time pressure is high in an office environment. As a rule of thumb, your CV gets scanned 30 seconds before it gets trashed. Maybe one minute if you are lucky. I think there are very capable people out there. But guys. Put good effort into your job application.

It turned out that a high number of applications do not have the most important info easy to find. If this most important info can not be found easily the application moves into the trash. Therefor check this free CV check list.

Takeaway

Get your job application in shape and present yourself professionally with a great attitude, professional training and motivation. You will get access to an amazing lifestyle.

The PADI Instructor Development Course has been a door opener for me. It was a gateway to a new path I did not even dream of before. I can strongly recommend taking the leap.

I am grateful for all the experiences I made on my journey as a dive professional.

EFR Instructor course has been completed for August 2017 on Phuket

The EFR Instructor course has been completed for August 2017 on Phuket in conjunction with PADI CDC Center 'Dive Asia'.
At Dive Asia's scuba diving training facilities at Kata Big Rock we met on Thursday morning to complete the EFR Instructor course.
The classroom was now used an accident emergency facility for practicing skills and scenarios. Once the required presentations by me were out of the way, the fun started with the hands on part. This is much more enjoyable that the actual presentations or the exams. We have 'Baby Annie', 'Junior Annie' and 'Little Annie' join the party and various skills are demonstrated and practiced.

We started the classroom presentation already on Wednesday and used Thursday to complete and review the exams and practice the skills and scenarios.

Today the PADI IE has started and right now Peter and It and all other PADI IE participants are navigating the five theory and the general standards & procedures exams.

PADI IDC on Phuket for August 2018 has been completed

PADI IDC on Phuket for August 2018 has been completed

The PADI IDC on Phuket for August 2018 has been completed in conjunction with PADI CDC Center 'Dive Asia', in Kata on Phuket!

For the last couple of days, Shin joined us, Shin is Japanese but lived 25 years in New York in the USA and since a few month in the Republic of Palau. He completed his PADI IDC back in March with a PADI Course Director I used to work with some ten years ago, Gianrico Mureddu. Back in March, Shin didn't feel ready for his PADI IE so he waited until now and joined It and Peter during our August 2017 PADI IDC here on Phuket for a few days of extra training and refreshing his knowledge and skills,
Today Shin and It completed their last training, the actual IDC was completed and closed yesterday.

Lots of training has been done over the last ten days. All performance requirements have been met, sometimes very successful and sometimes less successful. In both cases, it is all part of the development process that each individual goes through during a PADI IDC and what gets them ready to attend a PADI IE and ideally to become a good PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor after all the examinations.

Tomorrow the actual PADI IE or Instructor Exam will be knocking at their doors with a very early start. At 7.30am it all kicks off until tomorrow early afternoon, when we should have three new PADI Open Water Scuba Instructors. It will involve lots of nail biting, waiting, some stress and short bursts of action for all three and all other fellow participants, before these two days are over.

Stay tuned for updates!

At Dive Asia's Scuba Diving Training Center at Kata Big Rock we're in full swing. Peter from Hong Kong and It from Thailand are the August PADI IDC candidates and it seems we have a good group going.
Strong performances and results so far with the five theory exams and first skill practices in the confined water. The first couple of presentations by me are out of the way and the first couple of workshops have been completed. Some of the workshops we conducted were about control, the CESA (controlled Emergency Swimming Ascent) in confined water and lift bag use. Just a few of the workshops and there are plenty more to come.

So far so good, two days in and plenty more to come. Some hard work and excitement is in front of Peter and It but also some fun moments will be part of the IDC.

Testimonial by Sean Brennan of the July 2017 PADI IDC on Phuket, Thailand

Testimonial by Sean Brennan of the July 2017 PADI IDC on Phuket, Thailand

Here's the second one for last month, the Testimonial by Sean Brennan of the July 2017 PADI IDC on Phuket, Thailand in conjunction with PADI CDC Center 'Dive Asia'.

Sean came all the way over from Colorado in the USA to participate in his PADI IDC with us, after a referral of the dive shop owner where he completed all of his scuba diving courses. It's always good to know that people remember you!

Right now, about three weeks later, he's still on Phuket and working on his plan to become an active instructor on Phuket. The legal side is under investigation and in progress and housing has already been secured. It's good to see how your dream and plan are slowly coming together Sean, step by step. Excellent work!

You will be fine, looking at how you handled yourself during the July IDC on Phuket and the PADI IE. It's all about being organized!

Testimonial by Sean Brennan of the July 2017 PADI IDC on Phuket, Thailand; Sean practicing Rescue Exercise # 7 in the pool at Dive Asia's scuba diving training facilities at Kata Big Rock during the July 2017 PADI IDC

So here we are for Sean's testimonial;

I just recently took Camille's IDC and MSDT Prep course during July in Phuket and I can't speak highly enough about it.  Camille is incredibly knowledgeable in so many areas related to diving that it makes the course fun, interesting and in my opinion the best choice to prepare you for the I.E. and for a future career in the dive industry.  Camille takes the time to make sure you understand the information completely and was able to answer any questions I had.  He connects with his students and makes sure they feel confident heading into the examination.
His attention to detail and teaching attitude like I said earlier makes the class that much more enjoyable and informative.
Getting to learn from one of the best only increased my confidence going forward as a dive instructor.
His work with you doesn't stop once the class is over either, he is always there to help and answer any further questions you have about diving, working as an instructor or life in another country.  He knows multiple languages and although I had no problems because we both spoke English, he was able to get French materials and help my fellow classmate (who was French but could speak decent English) fully understand the material and feel confident going forward into his I.E. as well.

Again I can't thank him enough for being my teacher and helping me start my own career.  If you are looking for someone to do your IDC with look no further, you've found the best.

Thanks for taking the time out to write this testimonial, it's much appreciated and it will be good to see you progress on Phuket and get involved in the dive world there.

If you're interested in joining one of my up and coming PADI IDC programs after reading Sean's testimonial, don't hesitate to contact me for more detailed information about one of the following locations.

Testimonial by Michael Klausz of the July 2017 PADI IDC on Phuket, Thailand

Testimonial by Michael Klausz of the July 2017 PADI IDC on Phuket, Thailand

Here's one more, this time a Testimonial by Michael Klausz of the July 2017 PADI IDC on Phuket, Thailand, in conjunction with PADI CDC Center 'Dive Asia'.

During the July 2017 PADI IDC on Phuket, we started out as strangers at the beginning of the IDC program but grew together over the course of the program and in the end became friends. This is also what's reflected in Michael's testimonial and it's in French, so an added dimension to understand what he actually says for the non French speakers among us.

He does mention the additional help in French he received, by means of training aids in French and also my limited knowledge of French dive terminology helped.

It was good to have you aboard for the July IDC, Michael. Although he is still fairly young, he already had a career as a fire fighter in a Paris suburb behind him and had a good sense of humor as well.

It was very good to see how you booked progress during the IDC program and how you were able to kill the PADI IE at the end. Now it's off to Europe and work as a dive instructor there and put in use all the things you learned during the IDC. I'm looking forward to hear some updates how you will fare during that process. I'm also confident that you can handle this and will do the right thing(s). Good luck and enjoy your courses and work on Malta!

Testimonial by Michael Klausz of the July 2017 PADI IDC on Phuket, Thailand

Testimonial by Michael Klausz of the July 2017 PADI IDC on Phuket, Thailand; Michael in confined water, in a neutrally buoyant position, demonstrating some skills, in this case regulator recovery from behind the shoulder.

Here we go with Michael's testimonial, in French, so maybe get your dictionary out;

As always Michael, it's much appreciated that you took the time out to write this testimonial!

Are you interested in joining one of my PADI IDC programs after reading Michael's testimonial? The next opportunities to participate in one of my PADI IDC programs are our monthly PADI IDC's scheduled to start on Phuket, Thailand in conjunction with PADI CDC Center "Dive Asia', starting 6th September, 3rd October and 5th December. Another option may be the PADI IDC programs scheduled to start 21st September on Koh Phangan, Thailand in conjunction with PADI 5* IDC Center ' Haad Yao Divers' or 21st October in Khao Lak, Thailand in conjunction with PADI 5* IDC Center 'Sea Dragon' and 12th November in Moalboal in the Philippines in conjunction with PADI 5* IDC Center ' Neptune Diving Adventure'.
