PADI recreational side mount Instructor course on Phuket
Last Monday I conducted a PADI recreational side mount Instructor course on Phuket with Pray, the boat master of PADI CDC Center 'Dive Asia'. He expressed interest last time I was on Phuket
, earlier this year in May and this time around we arranged for him to take the PADI Instructor specialty course.

One afternoon we met at 'Dive Asia's' training facilities at Kata Big Rock, to cover the theoretical part of the side mount course and to practice assembling and disassembling the special side mount equipment and adjusting the equipment so it fits. Both are important since they differ from traditional back mount scuba diving, as we recreational divers are used to.

During the theoretical part we cover among others the history and origin of side mount diving, how it via cave diving went over to wreck diving and eventually ended up in recreational diving.
Assembling and disassembling the special side mount equipment is an important skill and needs practice to get ll pieces of equipment in the right spot and place. After that you will still adjust and re-adjust your side mount equipment over various dives, to get your personal 'perfect' constellation.

Once this was all done we went out to the Raya islands, to practice the confined skills and we had 3 dives that day to gain experience for Pray. The skills at Raya Yai bay one went over fairly easily and once Pray was comfortable with his gear and the skills, we immediately went for a first dive, during which we practiced the skills one more time.

Despite a windy and fairly rocking trip over to the Raya islands, the visibility was good, especially at Raya Noi's Banana Bay, where we conducted the second dive and most of the pictures were taken.
Once more we practiced all the skills during this and the third dive and Pray by now was very comfortable with his side mount equipment. Especially gearing up in the water at the start of the dive proved to be a very convenient option.

The third dive of the day was conducted at Raya Yai bay three, where we saw a lot of nudibranches. It was a good days diving and soon Pray should have his first side mount course going, after he logged some more dives on side mount this week.
