Talk on Decompression Illness at the Phuket hyperbaric chamber

Talk on Decompression Illness at the Phuket hyperbaric chamber

Last Wednesday there was a Talk on Decompression Illness at the Phuket hyperbaric chamber, presented by Kevin Morgan, the HST Co-ordinator and he is also a DMT and REMT.
In this case, for you divers, DMT doesn't stand for 'Divemaster trainee' or 'Divemaster in training' but it rather means 'Dive Medical Technician' and REMT means 'Remote Emergency Medical Technician'.
These are two very good ratings to possess, and are almost mandatory if you work full time at a hyperbaric chamber. It doesn't qualify you as a nurse or doctor but they are intense courses and upon completion you can deal with a lot of incidents, if needed, being guided and informed by phone by profesionals.

Let's get back on track though and the talk held by Kevin was very informative and interesting. It was long, well over two hours but it remained intersting all the time and it never hurts to continue your education and stay interested and the presentation by Kevin also covered some new topics for me.

The presentation was of special interest to me since I'm involved at the local hyperbaric chamber on Koh Samui, which is owned and operated by the same company as on Phuket, the SSS Recompression Chamber Network, with outlets in various countries, besides Thailand also in Mexico, Belize, Zanzibar and the Galapagos islands and their main office is in the USA.

Many topics were touched upon that I knew already and probably should know in my capacity but as already mentioned, there were also new topics covered and I learned some new things.

There was a fairly good turn out with around 14 interested people visiting the presentation that was held at the classroom facilities of the chamber, located directly across the road, opposite the actual hyperbaric chamber.

Since I am teaching a PADI IDC on Phuket, I invited the candidates and we all went together to the presentation, which was received well, not only by my PADI IDC candidates but by all present.

Considering the size of the Phuket dive industry, I was hoping that more people would show up for the presentation, hopefully dive shop managers and individual instructors will take future opportunities to bring more people to these kind of presentations. It's a part of the dive industry that is very important and the knowledge gained may help you one day.

Thanks to SSS Recompression Chamber Network, especially the local chamber on Phuket and his staff, Kevin and Paul, for giving this opportunity.

A review with some pictures of the local Phuket hyperbaric chamber wil follow shortly.
