The PADI IDC for November 2015 in Moalboal, Philippines has reached the half way mark and that's faster than you realize. It's another course during which we have lots of fun, hence time flies. In conjunction with PADI 5* IDC 'Neptune Diving Adventure' in Moalboal in the Philippines, we have an international class again, with candidates coming from Sweden and Belgium and with a Swedish/Finnish double nationality.
Rescue exercise # 7 practice, the unconscious diver at the surface, in full swing
We have been covering a lot of ground during the last 5 days, with skill circuits in confined water, confined water presentations and workshops, classroom presentations by me and the candidates and more workshops, confined and open water dives and exams are coming, plus some more power point presentations! It keeps everybody on their toes without putting unnecessary pressure on the candidates or without task loading them.

With such a small class, we have early days and we still have a nice pace. The PADI IE will be coming up soon, during the first couple of December days and the way things look like, they will be ready for the exam days.

Last week and early this week we conducted PADI Specialty Instructor training in Khao Lak, in conjunction with PADI 5* IDC Center "Sea Dragon'.
On our way to the Sea Chart wreck with all our equipment and supplies
The three candidates all had different amounts of specialties they participated in, all three had Enriched Air and Deep on their schedule, Rene and Dax added Wreck on top of this and Rene also participated in the Oxygen provider training and joined also in the Underwater Navigation and Underwater Naturalist specialties.
Rene setting up a line at the Sea Chart wreck
The first day was spent diving the Sea Chart wreck, a virgin wreck for me and our biggest worry was that there was no buoy, but lucky for us, the they before we went, a buoy was set up, guaranteeing that we would find the wreck!
The Sea Chart, a drawing how it looks like underwater
They turned out to be two great dives, with fairly good viz. The Sea Chart 1 was in the process of transporting 1,200 logs of hard wood in its 3200 tonnes hold, from Burma, heading across the Andaman Sea, down through the Straits of Malacca and than on to its final destination in Vietnam. However, in August 2009, the bulk carrier encountered problems not far from Thailand's coast, where rough seas and severe weather battered the ship, causing multiple leaks in its hull. Water leaked also in to the engine room and began to sink the vessel. All crew on board the Sea Chart 1 managed to escape on inflatable rafts and were rescued by a Thai Navy ship. MV Sea Chart 1, 84 meters long and 12 meters wide, now rests on her starboard side in 40 meters of water.
During a safety stop with Dax, Rene and Juha
The wreck makes for a great dive with plenty of large logs being scattered on to the sea floor or half outside of the ship. A huge amount of marine life has already gathered and settled on this wreck, It felt like diving in fish soup!
Two great dies were had and we accomplished all our performance requirements, including penetration.
The deep egg, when you're deep enough, around 27 meters, the yellow of an egg will be compressed enough by the surrounding pressure, so it stay whole, even if you gently push it around
The second day for PADI Specialty Instructor training in Khao Lak saw us back on a boat, and a big one this time, for a trip to the Similan Islands, and specifically island # 9. Here we conducted the deep dive specialty over two dives and we learned a lot, including potential problems that can occur at the surface, before you even start a dive. There was a very strong surface current but once we were at 37 meters, there was nothing left of that current.
Dax doing a timed skill during a deep dive, to check if he is influenced by nitrogen narcosis
On our second deep dive during our PADI Specialty Instructor training in Khao Lak, we descended straight on top of a guitar shark, who still was a few meter deeper than us. This was my first ever sighting of such a shark and I was really excited about this, since you don't get to see them that often! See the picture below.
My first ever guitar shark at Similan island # 9, not a great picture, but the only one I have
The last day of diving was only with Rene and we headed out to the Boonsung wreck, where we had another two great dives, to finish off the PADI Specialty Instructor training in Khao Lak. Once more it felt like diving in fish soup, that's how much fish had gathered at the wreck.
Rene practicing navigation patterns on land
We met all performance requirements for both the Underwater Navigation and Underwater Naturalist dives and had a great day on the boat as well. Good company and good dives always make life easy and enjoyable!
Thanks to Rene, Dax and Juha, it was a fun IDC and we had some fantastic dives together, hope to see back in Khao Lak come February 2016!
The Boonsung wreck
It's just a few more days now before my next PADI IDC starts, the last one in 2016 and it starts 22nd November in Moalboal in the Philippines, this is followed by the first PADI IDC in 2016 on 12th January on Koh Lanta, Thailand which is followed by 2nd February on Phuket, Thailand before we visit Khao Lak, Thailand again on 20th February.

Today the PADI IE in Khao Lak for November 2015 was very successful and now all three PADI IDC candidates from the November PADI IDC in conjunction with PADI 5* IDC Center 'Sea Dragon', are the newest PADI instructors on the planet!
From left to right; Juha (OWSI), Brendon (PADI Examiner), Rene (OWSI), Dax (OWSI) and Camille (PADI Course Director)
They managed to keep their nerves under control and deal with the stress of being evaluated really well and the result is something to be proud of; PADI OWSI or Open Water Scuba Instructor.
Yesterday the Orientation was done by Brendon, the PADI Examiner, followed by the 6 exams, their classroom presentation and the confined water. They all managed this successfully, so only Open Water was left this morning. A few hours to also navigated this without a hitch and now it's time to celebrate tonight.
Tomorrow is going to be a day off and on Monday and Tuesday we continue with Instructor level specialty training, including a trip to the Similan islands for the Deep dives.

Yesterday evening there was the first ever PADI Go Pro seminar in Khao Lak, Thailand, conducted by Any Auer, the PADI Regional manager, at PADI 5* IDC Center 'Sea Dragon'.
As it happened to be, it was also my ever first PADI Go Pro seminar and it hopefully won't be the last one.
A view on the attendees and Andy, the Regional Manager
We had a good turn out with approximately 15 people showing up, which made us all happy, and we're already looking into a second event, centered around our February 2016 PADI IDC in Khao Lak.
Andy Auer, the PADI Regional Manager
Andy's presentation was received very well and the feedback was that what he talked about was honest and realistic, without the sales pitches that some may have expected.
Andy conducting an interview with Camille
Working as an instructor in various settings, like in a shop, a resort or on a cruise boat were discussed but also the growth and current market position of PADI were discussed and all of this was laced with some real life experiences from Andy and plenty of interaction with the attendees.
Andy conducting an interview with Emily
Andy also conducted short interviews with me and Emily, a PADI Instructor working for PADI 5* IDC Center 'Sea Dragon', asking questions how we got involved in diving and why we took our own respective PADI IDC' and what our motivation was.

Today I received a testimonial by Steve Burning of the March 2015 PADI IDC in Moalboal, Philippines in conjunction with PADI 5* IDC Center 'Neptune Diving Adventure'. A few months ago by now, but nonetheless, I always enjoy receiving testimonials. It's much appreciated that you took the time out to write this testimonial! I'm looking forward seeing you soon at Panagsama beach again, later this month!
Check below the picture for Steve's testimonial;
Steve, second from left, after the PADI IE in Moalboal in the Philippines in March 2015
I took an IDC with Camille Lemmens at Neptune Diving Adventure, after which I said I would write a recommendation. So, while this holds a small apology to Camille for taking so long, it also comes with much more meaning.
Since the IDC I have now taught many OW courses, even more AOW course, and a few rescue and DM courses. The information and knowledge passed on by Camille and Johan not only made Passing the IE achievable, but also has played a big part in the way I have handled my own students.
The best way to show my level of respect for the skills and professionalism that I experienced during my IDC is to send my Dive Masters to Camille. That is what I am doing at the end of Nov.
Hopefully, I will continue to send Camille Instructor candidates. With Camille I can be sure they will get the best instruction and many tips which will help them throughout their career. Just as I was aided.
Thanks Camille for the great time and thanks even more for the tough parts of the course, it has made teaching easier.
If this peaks your interest, my next PADI IDC is scheduled later this month in Moalboal, Philippines and is also the last program this month, starting 22nd November, followed by the first program for 2016, scheduled to start 12th January on Koh Lanta, Thailand and this is followed by 2nd February on Phuket, Thailand.

Time does fly when you're having fun and it's absolutely true in this case and before you realize it, the PADI IDC for November 2015 in Khao Lak, Thailand is halfway!
Juha with a giant stride
We clawed our way into and through a bunch of presentations by me and today the three candidates started with their own first presentations and it was good! All three scored passing grades at their first attempts in the classroom and in the pool. Great job, well done! This gives a good solid base and room to improve and to makes things better, as we tend to say in the Netherlands!
Rene without his mask
More presentations, by me and the candidates are still in the pipeline, plus plenty more workshops and a set of exams are still to come. Enough to keep them interested and involved and to teach them a few ropes or is that knots?
Thanks to Juha, Rene and Dax for being such great IDC candidates so far!
Dax during his first classroom presentation
More PADI IDC's are coming up, the last program of this year is scheduled to start 22nd November in Moalboal in the Philippines and this is followed by the first program of 2016 on 12th January on Koh Lanta in Thailand and this is followed by 2nd February on Phuket in Thailand.
