Box jelly fish awareness and prevention presentation for 100 Degrees East dive center on Koh Samui

Today it was time for a box jelly fish awareness and prevention presentation for 100 Degrees East dive center on Koh Samui. All their English speaking staff attended the presentation and once more I had an attentive and inquisitive audience, who had the opportunity to find out more about the history of box jelly fish in Thailand and specifically in the Samui archipelago.
After two presentations during the day time yesterday for Miskawaan villa rental in Maenam and a presentation in the early evening for members of the Koh Samui dive community during which I reached 46 people, now another 10 can be added with this presentation today.

The staff of 100 Degrees East after the box jelly fish awareness and prevention presentation for 100 Degrees East dive center on Koh Samui

It's important to reach out and spread the word about box jelly fish awareness and prevention and make people aware of the correct procedures to follow in case they have to deal with box jelly fish injuries. Due to the fast working venom of the box jelly fish, it's important to know what to do without wasting time, since seconds can count in box jelly fish injuries.

The importance of having copious amounts of vinegar and people trained in CPR available at an accident are ital to survival of the victim. The presentation also covers the importance of stinger nets and vinegar poles on beaches and the use of stinger protective clothing, like stinger suits.

Thanks to 100 Degrees East for having me and to the staff for taking the time out to join the presentation. It was my pleasure and I hope that you learned something more about box jelly fish.

If you would like to have a box jelly fish awareness and prevention presentation for your staff or company, please contact me for more information.

Box jelly fish awareness and prevention presentation for the Koh Samui dive community

This evening I gave a box jelly fish awareness and prevention presentation for the Koh Samui dive community at the local hyperbaric chamber's upstairs classroom in Bang Rak. It was all about hazardous marine life tonight and specifically about the box jelly fish in the Samui archipelago.
During the day time I had already given two presentations for Miskawaan, private villa rental company in Maenam, bringing the total of people in today's box jelly fish awareness and prevention presentations to 36, a very good figure!

Twenty two Koh Samui dive community members attended tonight, a figure that made me very happy to see that much engagement in our dive community here. Thanks for taking the time guys and girls!

Watching a video during the box jelly fish awareness and prevention presentation for the Koh Samui dive community

It was great to see dive shop owners, instructors and divemasters from various companies on the island and we also had three Burmese staff attending. One of them had worked for various years on a Thai fishing boat and he had some very interesting stories to share about live on those fishing boats, in relation to jelly fish and box jelly fish, a great opportunity to get first hand information.

We also had a person in the audience who was stung at the surface at Sail Rock last year, one more person to get first hand information from and we also had the importer for Thailand of "stinger suits' attend, who lives on Koh Phangan.
A very mixed but very attentive group who came up with some good questions and walked away with newly gained information on how to deal with box jelly fish stings.

CPR training was not really necessary with this group, although I did offer this, but being a dive instructor, most of the attendees have taught a course with CPR this year, or had training in CPR already.

A great evening, thanks for taking the time out to all attendees, it was my pleasure and I was really happy with the turn out and having the opportunity to get the word out about box jelly fish awareness and prevention within the local Koh Samui dive community.

EFR Course for beach staff at the Imperial Boat House, Koh Samui

Today I taught an EFR Course for beach staff at the Imperial Boat House, Koh Samui and it was already the third time that I had the pleasure of teaching the beach staff of this resort in Choengmon. Once course was taught back in 2008 and one was taught in 2012.

EFR Course for beach staff at the Imperial Boat House, Koh Samui

From left to right; myself, Khun Tanongsak, Khun Watchava, Khun Suthi, Khun Chockchay, Khun Oula, Khun Chanon and Khun Tassanee

It's challenging teaching a course to non native English speakers when there are no translated materials available, hence my wife Khun Tassanee helped with translations, just as she did in previous course that I taught at the IBH (Imperial Boat House).

CPR or primary care training

A lot of ground was covered and due to the recent and tragic event on Lamai beach, where a young German woman died from a box jelly fish sting, I included a presentation about box jelly awareness and prevention in today's course, which was well received and will help the IBH beach staff to deal with box jelly fish injuries, in case there may be such a case at Choengmon beach. Up till today, I am not aware of a box jelly fish incident on Choengmon beach.

Practicing a log roll

All topics from the EFR course were covered, including a presentation by me and very importantly, some hands practice which included two Little Annie mannequins, CPR training, recovery position practice, choking, splints and bandaging among others.

Bandaging

Secondary care was also covered and practiced and to top everything off, an exam ended the day.

How to use a sling

It was a fun and constructive day this EFR Course for beach staff at the Imperial Boat House, Koh Samui during which a lot was learned and taught. The staff walked away with new or refreshed skills and a better understanding of how to deal with box jelly fish stings.

All in all a good day! Thanks to the Imperial Boat House and I'm looking forward to the next training day.
