Testimonial by Larry Bainbridge

Yesterday I received this great testimonial by Larry, IDC candidate of the recent PADI IDC in Osan South Korea;

I am a professional instructor by trade and I have been involved in training personnel for well over 16 years now, so I understand what it takes to be excellent within this profession; it takes someone like Camille Lemmens.  I took the time to research Course Directors and listen to past students before I decided on Camille and the decision paid off greatly.  Camille has a superb understanding of people and constantly tailors his instruction to each individual.  His implementation of multiple techniques ensures that each instructor candidate will have the best possibility of not just passing the Instructor Examination but excelling at it and walking away with a solid understanding of what it means to be a PADI instructor.  Camille has a level of patience and kindness that puts students at ease, which in the case of an IDC is critical; his attitude and charisma make students push themselves harder and expect more of themselves.

I was expecting another semi-challenging course that was “easy”; what I got was so much more and well worth the money spent.  Camille tailored our IDC to our group level (we were all AI’s at the start of the IDC).  Because of this we were able to have specific discussions on cases that we have either run across our selves or simply needed clarification on.  Having a custom course was also extremely beneficial because Camille was responsible to not only teach one of the many IDC’s that he does but now he had to teach the new PADI Open Water course.  Because of his dedication to providing the most correct information he would constantly be verifying standards and cross-checking information between old and new courses.  As instructor candidates we saw this as true dedication, he was setting the standard for what we should be as instructors.  In everything that Camille did he set the standard, if we did not perform perfect we did not get high marks.   By not just handing out high marks this made each of us strive for better performance, and in the end it paid off.  During my IDC all instructor candidates not only successfully passed but they did exceedingly well.

Camille Lemmens is a great instructor, a great Course Director and he lives the PADI standard.  I can’t say enough how great an experience it was to work with him as he is the epitome of a great instructor.  If you simply want to pass the IE choose any Course Director, if you want to truly learn what it means to be an instructor, excel on your IE and have a mentor throughout your career the choice is simple…choose Camille.

And here it is; the official proof of my dive North of the 38th parallel in South Korea! Larry, the owner of 38th Parallel dive club send me this certificate, which was my 1997th dive.

It was a very interesting experience and thanks to Larry, George and Michael for joining me on this adventure! As it says on the 38th Parallel website, not many divers can say that they completed this dive.

Gas Blender Instructor course in South Korea

It has been a while since I taught one of these courses, but last week Larry and George participated in and passed the DSAT Gas Blender Instructor course! In Namae-ri in South Korea they filled Enriched Air tanks before one of our Deep dives, the last day of the Instructor Specialty training and it was a nice setup at the filling station.

Job well done guys, another certification to show for and this may well be a very interesting one that hopefully will come in handy and useful in your diving future.

PADI Instructor specialty training in South Korea

Yesterday we completed the last training dives for the Specialty Instructor training dives with the recent Osan IDC group and after four days of diving and 7 dives (for Larry eight!), we finally could call it a day.

Underwater navigation specialty

Walking patterns with a compass at land for the Underwater Navigation specialty

During one of the dive, I completed my 2000th logged dive and Allen completed his 1000th logged dive during the last dive of this trip.

Knot tying for the wreck diver specialty

Knot tying for the wreck diver specialty, lots of fun was had during land practice

We did some beach dives at Sacheon-myeon, see picture below and two boat dives for the wreck specialty and yesterday we completed the series of dives with two boat dives at Namae-ri for the Deep dive specialty.

The dive site at Sacheon-myeon

Lisa, Michael and Carel each got 7 specialties completes, George eight and Larry nine. Job well done guys and girl and special thanks for having the patience to dive with this warm water diver in this, for me, cold water. During the boat dives we hit temperatures of 9, 10, 11 and 12C on a regular base and that was cold for me, despite my 5mm semi dry wetsuit. Next it will be 8mm  semi dry or a dry suit!

Namae-ri dive store

Besides the already mentioned specialties, we also completed Night-, Search & Recovery-, Nitrox- and Emergency Oxygen Provider Instructor specialties.
Larry and George completed the Gas Blender Instructor specialty training and Larry also completed the side mount instructor training dive!

Lots of fun was had, good times, good food was had and good company. It was sad to see you all go different directions yesterday! Job well done though and looking forward to seeing you all again!

My 2000th logged dive

In the midst of the current Specialty Instructor training in Sacheon-myeon, in South Korea, following the recent and very successful PADI IE here, I completed my 2000th logged dive yesterday!

PADI Instructor specialty training in Sacheon-myeon in South Korea

A great and fun group to dive with, from left to right; Bokhee, Lisa, Larry, George, Michael, Carel, Allen and myself in front

Since I didn't bring my underwater housing out to the coast, I hope to get some pictures taken with a Go Pro camera later on. It was a fun dive in rather unusual conditions for me, diving in a semi dry 5mm in 19C of water temperature.
The actual dive was the second and final dive of the Search & Recovery Instructor Specialty and it was the second out of three dives yesterday.

A good achievement that makes me proud and a great group to dive with. Thanks guys!

It was an exciting but also nerve wrecking two days during the PADI IE in Sacheon-myeon in South Korea, but it was all worth it. They all passed with flying colors in all 4 parts of the exam that they got tested in. The sun even came out today to make it an extra good day!

Diving at the 38th Parallel in South Korea

Yesterday I did a fairly unique dive, not a dive that many people have logged. I dived at the 38th Parallel in South Korea, the pre-war border of South and North Korea, before the war.

38th Parallel, group

Group picture, from left to right; Michael, Larry, myself and George

The actual location according to a Google map is at Gisamun-ri, Hyeonbuk-myeon, Yangyang-gun, Gangwon-do. So, there you are! After our PADI IDC Open Water dive yesterday at Namae 2 beach, Larry, one of the IDC candidates asked me if I wanted to do a dive at the 38th Parallel.

38th Parallel, map

George pointing out on a map where we are

That was completely down my line of interest, so it took no convincing at all, especially considering that we were only a 5 minute car drive away. Larry also runs a dive club called '38th Parallel divers'. If somebody knows about diving here, it's Larry!

38th Parallel, exhibition center

Exhibition center

After a short card rive, sure enough, we arrived at the 38th Parallel marker on the East coast. There's a big stone marker, as can be seen on the first picture, an exhibition center, which we didn't enter, since we were in wet wetsuits (we just hopped in the car after the dive and it was raining) and a few other touristy bits and pieces. There's also a beach just around the corner, which we headed off to.

38th Parallel, beach

Exiting the water after the dive

Once on the beach, where there were a couple of dozen surfers having fun in the waves, just when we were about to enter the water, a young police officer told us that we can't enter, due to safety regulations because of bad weather conditions, since a typhoon was about to pass over the peninsula.

38th Parallel, bears

Did anyone say tourist attraction?

Just when we were about to call it a day, a more senior police officer came along and after a bit of talking, allowed us to go in for 5 minutes and not past the concrete wall that protects the harbor. Happy as Larry we went off and into the water and did our 6 minutes dive. Upon surfacing, the older police officer was talking on a bull horn and I heard sirens going off and all the surfers were back on the beach. Which slightly agitated movements, he ordered us out of the water. All along Korean's coast, it seemed that everybody was not allowed to enter the water anymore.

I was a very happy camper though, we managed to complete the dive and now I'm an official 38th Parallel diver and I will receive a certificate from Larry and later the same day, I also received two t-shirts from him, of his dive club! Awesome!

Thanks a lot to Larry for taking me out here, for George for being a buddy and coming along, just fore the trip and for Michael, since we shared the same experience, both being the new 38th Parallel divers on the block!

PADI IDC in South Korea has been completed

All good things come to an end, even this second ever Western PADI IDC in South Korea. Currently we're in Sacheon-myeon at the coast, getting two days of open water training in. Yesterday we dived the Sacheon-myeon beach and today we dived at Namae 2 beach.

PADI IDC open water Namae 2 beach, South Korea

Today's open water training at Namae 2 beach in South Korea, just 5 minutes away of the 38th Parallel

The weather turned cloudy and rainy but we still got two dives with good visibility of around 7 meters and water temperature of 22C/ Not too bad at all and they were two enjoyable dives. The up and coming specialty instructor training might see us encounter slightly colder water of around 10 to 16C. That might be something I need to get used to with my last 14 years of tropical and warm water diving!

All candidates did well and they all should do fine during the PADI IE starting tomorrow. Let's cross our fingers, especially for the exams.

If you're interested in becoming a PADI Instructor, my next PADI IDC kicks off very soon; 16th August on Gili Air in Indonesia or on 14th September in Moalboal in the Philippines followed by 31st September on Koh Samui in Thailand.
