Looking back at a great dive year; 2014

It's a good feeling, looking back at a great diver year; 2014! It was fun and successful.

With 13 programs, 53 IDC candidates, 2 IDCS Courses, 151 Instructor level specialties, 16 EFR Instructor courses and 20 diver level specialties, it was s busy year and there was progress compared to last year in the total number of certifications.

Looking back at a great dive year; 2014

PADI IDC Osan, South Korea, July-August 2014

There were 6 IDC's in Thailand with 19 candidates, 4 programs in Indonesia with 20 candidates, my second program in Osan, South Korea which was also the second ever Western PADI IDC ever in South Korea, after I taught the first ever Western PADI IDC in South Korea in 2011 and I'm back teaching IDC programs in the Philippines again, 2 programs with 4 candidates in Moalboal, a slow but sure start of setting up a successful IDC program in the Philippines.

My 2000th logged dive was also due this year and happened to be in Sacheon-Myeon in South Korea and ooooh, what was the water cold. I will never forget the upset eyes of my students at 35 meters in 10C water when I gave the let's go up sign after about one minute! Next time I need a 7mm semi dry or dry suit when diving in these conditions!

Looking back at a great dive year; 2014

There was also for the 8th consecutive time my Platinum PADI Course Director rating, which by now makes me one of the few PADI Course Directors in the Asia Pacific region who can boast that he received this rating uninterrupted since it's induction. On top of that there were also 7 'Certificates of Recognition for Excellence' received from PADI, written by some of last years IDC candidates.

A very special award and event was the 38th Parallel dive in South Korea. Special thanks to Larry for organizing this.

Looking back at a great dive year; 2014

There were some countries represented from which I had for the first time students; Norway, Bahamas and Estonia.

Thanks to all the dive centers in Thailand; Khao Lak, Koh Lanta, Phuket and Koh Samui and also in the Philippines, South Korea and Indonesia that I worked with this year and to all my candidates. Thanks a lot for choosing m IDC program and making this a memorable year!

Testimonial by Irish Mae Temblor

Just received this testimonial by Irish Mea Temblor, who participated in the recent December 2014 PADI IDC in Moalboal, Philippines. Thanks Irish for writing this testimonial,it's much appreciated!

After 12 days of preparation during the IDC, I manage to get through the IE and my MSDT after. This success wouldn't be possible if not because of Camille and his staff Johan in Neptune Diving Adventure. During those days of IDC I was well prepared especially with the areas that I was weak. He gave me pointers that really points and was very specific and detailed on all the areas that I need to cover which made it easy in the IE. Upon my MSDT I got plenty of ideas on how to make courses more exciting which I know is a very good tool in this industry. My biggest thanks to Camille and his staff Johan also for the people in Neptune Diving Adventure who had been very helpful to me in so many ways. And also to my Co-IDC/IE candidates who did it well during the IDC/IE. I wish you all good health more blessings and more IDC to come.

Cheers, Irish Mae L. Temblor

New cooperation with PADI 5* IDC Center 'Atlantis Dive Resort' in Puerto Galera, Philippines

It's time to announce one more new cooperation this year, with PADI 5* IDC Center 'Atlantis Dive Resort' in Puerto Galera in the Philippines. I'm proud and happy to announce the second new cooperation in a row before the end of this year.

With owner and fellow PADI Course Director Andy Pope I'm looking forward to continue a great PADI IDC tradition at PADI 5* IDC Center 'Atlantis Dive Resort'. Located on Sabang beach, the dive center and resort are near the pier, a mere 5 minute walk and offer great facilities for teaching PADI IDC's.

New cooperation with PADI 5* IDC Center 'Easy Divers' on Koh Samui, Thailand

Before the end of the year I can announce some exciting news, for starters a new cooperation with PADI 5* IDC Center 'Easy Divers' on Koh Samui, Thailand. Back in 1999, straight out of a PADI IDC in which I participated earlier that year, I started to work as a dive instructor on Koh Samui for one of Easy Divers' branches, a 5* resort where I eventually met my current wife!
It's a small world so to say and the circle becomes fully round again.

I'm excited about the new options we have and looking forward to this new cooperation. With fellow PADI Course Director Marita Fassbender on staff, we both participated in the same CDTC in 2003, we offer a unique amount of PADI IDC experience on Koh Samui and a rarely available amount of experience in all of Thailand.

One of the new things in 2015 will be to offer full German PADI IDC's at Easy Divers.

New cooperation with PADI 5* IDC Center 'Easy Divers' on Koh Samui, Thailand

Testimonial by Marc Schimmel

Today I received this testimonial by Marc Schimmel, who participated in the December 2014 PADI IDC in Moalboal, Philippines. Thanks for taking the time to write this Marc, much appreciated.

Diving in Moalboal, Philippines

After the end of the recent PADI IDC in Moalboal in the Philippines and during the Specialty Instructor training dives we saw some interesting underwater life.

Mandarin fish, Talisay, Panagsama beach, Moalboal, Philippines

Here are two mandarin fish, having sex on the reef by rubbing against each other. This mating behavior can usually only be observed during dusk dives, the smaller in the front is the female and the bigger one in the back is the male. Picture at Talisay dive site

Nudibranch, Talisay, Panagsama beach, Moalboal, Philippines

Nembrotha kurbayana nudibranches, with this picture I'm not sure of the three nudi's are having sex on the reef or if this is part of the so called 'trailing' behavior that some nudibranches display at times. I couldn't find any information that this specific species have this trailing behavior. Picture at Talisay dive site

Specialty instructor training in Moalboal, Philippines, December 2014

After the recent IDC in Moalboal and the PADI IE in Dauin, it was time to get some Specialty Instructor training done with Irish and check the underwater beauty around Moalboal.

Irish during the deep dive

Deep dive timed task at Pescador island

All three candidates participated in the Nitrox Instructor specialty, which is included in all of my IDC's for free. Irish however opted for 5 more specialties; Deep, Night, Underwater Navigation, Drift and Digital Underwater Photography.

Irish practicing using a compass

Practicing using a compass on land before the actual dive

We had some lovely dives and the deep dive to 38 meters stood out because of the great visibility at Pescador island and the absence of a current and yesterday evening's night dive stood out because fo the amount of underwater life we encountered, including a 'sponge crab' or 'Dromiidae', a first for me. The mating mandarin fish were also very nice to see during that dive.

We had a couple of great and enjoyable dives, just what we needed in order to relax after the previous busy and stressful weeks of the IDC and PADI IE.

Specialty instructor is offered after each PADI IDC and on special demand in-between IDC programs. The next PADI IDC is scheduled to start 3rd January 2015 on Koh Lanta, Thailand, followed by a program scheduled to start 3rd February on Phuket, Thailand which is followed by a program scheduled to start 9th March in Moalboal, Philippines again.

Testimonial from Lucinda Roberts

In a short time frame, here's the second testimonial from the recent November 2014 Khao Lak IDC in conjunction with PADI 5* IDC Center 'Sea Dragon'. This one is from Lucinda Roberts. Thanks for taking the time to write this;

"Camille is an incredible Course Director and I'm so delighted to have done the IDC with him. He ran the course really professionally, and made sure that we all had plenty of time to practice and really get to grips with the exercises - which were not always easy.
I was really nervous starting the IDC as there was an awful lot of information to take onboard in a relatively short amount of time. Camille did a fantastic job of increasing my confidence and ensured that I felt fully prepared by the time we took the IE. Thank you Camille, I couldn't have done it without you - you're a true pillar of the diving community!"

PADI IE for December 2014 in Dauin, Philippines was very successful

It took two days of controlling their nerves and remembering all the knowledge they had gained during their recent PADI IDC in Moalboal, taught in conjunction with PADI 5* IDC Center 'Neptune Diving Adventures' and all three candidates passed the PADI IE with flying colors and high scores. Job well done Jesper, Irish and Marc from Sweden, Philippines and Germany with Johan from Sweden staffing.

Now we will relax today, the 'day after' and continue with some specialty instructor training.

Testimonial by John Roberts

Recently I received this testimonial by John Roberts who participated in the PADI IDC for November 2014 in Khao Lak, Thailand. Thanks for writing this John!;

I have recently completed my PADI IE after 12 days of preparation on the IDC with Camille Lemmens at Sea Dragon dive centre in Khao Lak, Thailand.

I managed to pass with high grades during the examination process and this is completely down to Camille and his staff instructors preparation. Well done to the other guys on the IDC/IE, I have made some new friends who I look forward to 'working' with soon.
Camille is a great guy with a ton of experience and I would recommend him to anyone looking to become a PADI Instructor as they would be hard pushed to find better.
I look forward to the journey on my chosen path and know that I have Camille and PADI in support, if I need them.
Kind regards to you and your family Camille.
I look forward to our paths crossing soon.

PADI IDC in Moalboal, Philippines for December 2014 reached the half way mark

Time flies by during the current PADI IDC in Moalboal, Philippines. We're already halfway through this course and we keep charging along, despite typhoon Hagupit that raged over the Philippines just a day ago when it hit land and now it's moving around, North of us.

PADI IDC Moalboal, Philippines

Listening to an interesting presentation during the IDC

We have a nice confined water site in front of PADI 5* IDC Center 'Neptune Diving Adventure' but due to said typhoon, which is named Ruby in the Philippines, we had to divert to a pool.
We've been busy and were able to keep the program on track though. Just a few more days and we'll be off to Dumaguete and Dauin for the PADI IE.

First ever Shark Guardian presentation in the Philippines, 2nd December 2014 in Moalboal

It's been over a year ago since I witnessed my first Shark Guardian presentation on Gili Air in Indonesia. Ever since I helped in organizing a Shark Guardian presentation on Koh Samui, Thailand earlier this year and I helped out a little bit during a two day visit of Shark Guardian to two different International schools on Samui in October 2014.

During this last two day visit, Brendon, one of the directors of Shark Guardian, and myself got to talk a bit and the idea came up to have me aboard as one of the Shark Guardian leaders, for my up and coming trip to the Philippines this December.

Shark Guardian presentation Moalboal, Philippines, group picture

A group picture of about half of the visitors

At the time being there was one Shark Guardian center in the Philippines, in Moalboal, exactly where I was going to visit and where we planned the first Philippines Shark Guardian presentation.
With a bit of preparation and training with and by Brendon, I was sent on the road!

Shark Guardian presentation Moalboal, Philippines, audience

Part of the audience during the presentation

Johan at Neptune Diving Adventures, manager of the first Shark Guardian dive center, at Panagsama Beach near Moalboal, organized a venue and with a bit of advertising we were ready to go! The turn out for this first Philippine presentation was very good and encouraging and some 50 people showed up; divers, dive pro's and a few non divers as well.

Shark Guardian presentation Moalboal, Philippines, audience

Part of the audience as seen from behind me

With a captive audience and some good questions, we had a successful evening and at the end a nice amount of Shark Guardian was bought by the audience, more questions were asked and contact information exchanged.

The Philippines is ready for more, so please keep an eye out for more Shark Guardian presentations next year!

Now there are two Shark Guardian dive centers in the Philippines! Hopefully there can be some more added soon!

Thanks to Brendon, Liz, Johan, Jesper and George and all the good people that showed up!

PADI IDC for November 2014 in Khao Lak, Thailand has been completed

At long last, we have completed the November 2014 PADI IDC 2014 in Khao Lak in onjunction with PADI 5* IDC Center, 'Sea Dragon'! Nicely in time, everything is out of the way, all performance requirements met, all workshops done and over with and all exams passed, except one physics exam. One of the candidates is still trying to pass the physics exam, so two days are still available to get him to see the light and make physics into a friend!

PADI IDC November 2014 Khao Lak Open Water

After the Open Water dives, on our way back to the harbor. From left to right; Roman, Randy, Tom, myself, Andy, Lucinda, Ben, John and in front Fiona.

It was lots of time, although each individual candidates had their moments of doubt, frustration or fatigue at some stage. Nonetheless, it was a great effort and now they're ready to take on the PADI IE, next week Tuesday and Wednesday!

Before that, we will get the EFR Instructor course out of the way tomorrow and all candidates can enjoy a day off Monday, to relax, prepare or last minute study.

Except for Tom that is, who will complete his sidemount diver course with me on Monday.

Thanks to Fiona and Vee for staffing, it made life a lot easier for the candidates and for myself as well!

If you would like to join my next PADI IDC, 4th December a course starts in Moalboal in the Philippines, to be followed by the first IDC of 2015 which is scheduled to start 3rd January on Koh Lanta, Thailand and this is followed by 3rd February on Phuket, Thailand.

PADI IDC for November 2014 in Khao Lak, Thailand is half way

With such a big group as in the current PADI IDC in Khao Lak, it's difficult not to have a good time and as we know, when you have a good time, time flies!

Roman and Andy during the skill circuit

Roman and Andy during the skill circuit with an alternate air source skill

At the half way point, we've covered lots of ground during this PADI IDC in Khao Lak, classroom presentations by me and the candidates, confined water presentations and skill circuits in the pool, workshops, exams and more of the same and open water presentations are still to come!

Tom and Randy during the skill circuit

Tom and Randy during the skill circuit with an alternate air source skill

It's a good group, we're busy but it's fun and it's good to see the confidence grow each day with all the candidates.

Ben during the skill circuit

Look Mum, no air! says Ben.

Next week will see the PADI IE, also in Khao Lak and until then we have plenty of time to get more training in, including the EFR Instructor course.

Lucinda during the skill circuit

All is good according to Lucinda

When all is said and done and the IE has been passed by all candidates, we'll hopefully be doing some diving for the Instructor specialty ratings

Stay tuned for more updates and in the meantime, if you're interested in participating in one of my PADI IDC programs, the next one and last program of this year is scheduled to start 4th December in Moalboal in the Philippines followed by the first program of 2015, scheduled to start 3rd January on Koh Lanta in Thailand which is followed by a program scheduled to start 3rd February on Phuket in Thailand.

Working at the Koh Samui hyperbaric Chamber

During my spare time when I'm back on Koh Samui, I'm on call for the Hyperbaric chamber here on the island, which is located in Bang Rak.

When there's a patient and I'm on the island, I can expect a call to help out either being the operator or the tender.

Koh Samui hyperbaric chamber

The Koh Samui hyperbaric chamber in Bang Rak

Very simply put;
Being the operator means that you're on the outside and regulate the depth of the patient and check the duration of the patients stay at certain predetermined depths and the tender is inside the chamber with the patient, looking after the general well being and/or condition of a patient.
As a tender, you go inside the chamber for the whole duration of that days specific treatment and look after the patient.

Koh Samui hyperbaric chamber

Ricci, the manager on the left

Last month, usually considered to be low season, there were three cases and since I was on the island, I was involved in the treatment of two of these cases.
The Samui chamber is part of a world wide chain and the Thai main operation is located in Phuket, where they on a regular base conduct chamber technician courses.

My operator and tender course

My operator and tender course back in 2000

My course was way back in 2000 and ever since I have been involved with the local Samui chamber on a regular base. Due to me being so much on the road, I'm not as much available as I would like, but every time I can help out, it's always a pleasure!

If you're interested in or would like more information about working at the Phuket or Samui chamber, please contact me.

5 Tips For Divers With Water In Their Nose

It hasn't been easy to find guest blog writers who fit into this blog and are not out for commercial interests. At last, the second person has been found and here's a good article by fellow blogger Nazem Youssef, who completed his IDCS course back in October 2007, which was during my early blogging days!.

You can find his blog here.

Enjoy the article;

5 Tips For Divers With Water In Their Nose

Many divers start off with water in their nose. Under the water even with your nose in the mask water can still find its way in. Many people find difficulty with this at first. Mastering breathing out of your nose at the correct time is key to less water in your nose and a more comfortable dive. These tips will help you get rid of the water.

Proper Fitting Mask

To find the right seal, place the mask on your face with the strap loose and breath in from your nose. It should not allow air to be sucked in and you should be able to pinch your nose to equalize your ears. Keep in mind masks with larger volume will take more air to clear. Look for a low profile mask where the glass is closer to your face.

Water in your mask?

Water in your mask?

Get in Your Comfort Zone

Practice in shallow water with the mask off, regulator in and your face in the water, under supervision if needed.  Position your nose so no water is getting in and start inhaling through your mouth. Exhale through your nose and continue until you are comfortable with water around your nose. As you get more comfortable move around and even put your mask on and clear it. You can do this with full gear or just your snorkeling gear. Clearing water out will become second nature very quickly.

Remember Look Down, Breath Out, and Look Up

These are the basic step in clearing your mask, but it’s amazing to watch them get thrown out the window. When you first feel water in your mask or nose look down as you inhale. This moves the water to the bottom of the mask and as you exhale the water is displaced out. Breath out and then start to move your head up to clear any remaining water.

Loosen Up Your Mask Strap

Contrary to popular belief you don’t need to have your mask strap as tight as you can get it. A proper fitting mask will stay without a strap. Now don’t go taking if off, you still need it to keep your mask on if it gets bumped. You don’t want to deform the mask’s seal by pulling on the glass too much. This is what can cause leaks. Keep it just tight enough to stay on your head. Look for a Velcro mask strap so you don’t have to adjust it all the time.

Don’t Lift The Bottom Of Your Mask

When you blow out of your nose the air displaces the water by having more pressure in the mask than the surrounding water. Put your fingers on the top of the mask on each side and forget about your thumbs. Pushing on the top of the mask relieves enough pressure to allow the water to be pushed out.

While there are many different ways to clear your mask, you can use these tips to guide you in the right direction. Dive in and don’t be discouraged by a little water in your nose.

Box jellyfish awareness presentations for Koh Samui hotel staff

After last weeks involvement in Shark Guardian presentations on Koh Samui, early this week it was time for presentations about box jellyfish for hotel staff on Koh Samui.

An extensive blog post about these two presentations can be found here on my Koh Samui info and weather blog.

Four Seasons Resort, Koh Samui

Dr. Lakkana one of the few box jelly fish experts in Thailand held the two presentations and she was sponsored by the BOE (Bureau of Epidemiology).
The presentations were organized by me on behalf of the Koh Samui chapter of the THA (Thai Hotel Association).

Rocky Boutique Resort, Koh Samui

Besides the presentation, there was also basic CPR training with staff of the Bangkok-Samui hospital.

Hopefully this will be the start of more awareness and prevention around the island!

Shark Guardian presentations at international school on Koh Samui, Thailand

Earlier this week, Shark Guardian's director, Brendon Ford Sing, conducted two presentations at two different International schools on Koh Samui in Thailand.
This was the result from a presentation earlier this year on the island, in July.

Around 80 students (between 7 to 11 years old) and teachers were present for a presentation on Thursday at the Samui International School and the presentation was received with great enthusiasm.

SCL, the older students, between 11 and 14 years old

On Friday, two presentations were held at the SCL International school in Lamai, again each presentation with around 80 students and teachers and once more it was received with enthusiasm and great interest.

It was great to see two different presentations, targeting different age groups and thus maintaining the interest levels.

A great two days and for a very good cause, to raise awareness about sharks, explaining that sharks are not to be scared off and that a life without sharks in our oceans will have serious implications and upsets the balance in the oceans.
Well worth checking out the Shark Guardian presentation schedule and visit a presentation if you have the opportunity.
