Tonight is party time and a great PADI IDC has now been put into the books! Over the next few days a few candidates will complete Specialty Instructor training and they're all on their way to their first jobs as PADI Instructors shortly afterwards. Today I already started with a side-mount course, straight after the IE closing!
Well done guys, it was fun, you were a great group!
Come and join the fun during one of my next programs and start teaching PADI scuba courses under a palm tree environment! Your next opportunity for participating in a PADI IDC with me will start 17th November in Khao Lak, Thailand followed by the last IDC this year scheduled to start 8th December on Malapascua in the Philippines. The first program for 2014 is scheduled to start 4th January on Koh Lanta in Thailand!
The current PADI IDC on Gili Air for October has actually been completed yesterday! Today the candidates are already sweating it out during the PADI IE, also here on Gili Air at PADI 5* IDC Center 'Oceans 5'.

From many different resources I heard a lot about the 'Shark Guardian' presentations, an initiative by fellow PADI Course Director Brendon Singh.
The presentations are becoming so popular that Brendon and his wife Liz can slowly start making a shift to be their main work and one step that helped was that they are now an officially acknowledged charity in the UK, since July 2013.
The presentation is very informative and even for experienced dive instructors there are plenty of interesting and new pieces of information and knowledge available during the presentation.
The 'shark' family is shown by it's various classifications and plenty of video's and pictures accompany the presentations, which is delivered in a relaxed yet very informative and knowledgeable way.
During the presentation it becomes very obvious how passionate Brendon and Liz are about shark protection and conservation.
A new initiative by Shark Guardian for all divers and professionals in Thailand is the 'eshark' project.
eShark provides a simple way for divers and snorkelers to report the sharks, rays and sawfish they see, and don’t see (zero’s are just as important!), in a way that is used to assess and monitor populations, communities and ecosystems. Most importantly these data are used to assess the need for, and success of marine management initiatives, including sanctuaries.
eShark surveys have been rigorously developed through collaborations with divers, statisticians, biologists and experts in the field of citizen science.

Brendon and Liz run this project on a voluntary base and support themselves by selling bits and pieces of merchandise and if you're interested in having a presentation in your dive center, international school or other event, please contact them and they will try their best to find a way to make it happen, It worked in Hong Kong, Brunei and Indonesia, just to name a few, why wouldn't it work at your place?

Time flies when you're having fun, something that especially has a meaning during this PADI IDC on Gili Air in Indonesia in conjunction with PADI 5* IDC Center 'Oceans 5', the second IDC I conduct this month.
Explaining some skills
The usual parade of IDC related topics have been passing the revenue; theory and standards exams, classroom presentations, work shops, confined and open water dives, rescue scenarios and great lunches at Oceans 5 restaurant.
Ramos, our Indonesian candidate having a good time!
All 6 candidates are expected to participate in the PADI IE, conducted here at 'Oceans 5' dive resort come 30 and 31 October.
The second PADI IDC I conduct this month has kicked off and we're already on day 3 of the Gili Air, October 2013 IDC.
Enjoying the theory exams, in the front; Ramos, Antoine and Franck and in the back Juri, David, Gina and Martin
There are 7 IDC candidates but only six will make it into the PADI IE this time, Martin will participate over 2 programs and join an IE next year.
As usual, it's very international again with candidates originating from Indonesia, France, Finland, Italy and the Netherlands.
Sunny all day long except when we hit the pool for a skill circuit
If you're looking to participate in a life changing like an IDC, my next program starts 17th November in Khao Lak in Thailand followed by the last program this year, scheduled to start 8th December on Malapascua in the Philippines. The first IDC for 2014 is scheduled to start 4th January on Koh Lanta in Thailand.

Marcia was running her dive center 'Gekko divers' in Phuket, Thailand and she is well known and respected within the international dive community.
Marcia at the surface during one of the open water dives of the IDC in Dauin last year
In July 2012 she participated in the IDC Staff course with me in Dauin, Philippines and it was my privilege to have known her and to have been able to work and dive with her.
Marcia during one of her Australian dives
She made a big impression on most people that got to know her and one of her big achievements is the way PADI is changing the way open water students should be buoyant in their skills during the new and revised way the Open Water course should be taught in the near future; "new emphasis to increase buoyancy practice and application, conduct as much of the training as possible while students are neutrally buoyant (rather than sitting on the bottom)".
She was the person who introduced me to this and she wrote an article in the Undersea Journal about this.
She was also a well respected moderator on Scubaboard, probably the biggest online dive chat community in the world, where she was known as 'Quero'. You can send your condolences on Scubaboard at this thread.
Rest in peace Marcia and my thoughts are with her family
Oliver receiving his iPad from PADI staff member Young Hee Haniss. Well done Oli!
Oliver completed his Divemaster course and PADI IDC with PADI 5* IDC Center 'The Dive Academy' here on Koh Samui and during his Divemaster course his mentor and instructor was IDCS Instructor Claire Whitfield, who completed her IDC and IDCS course with me.
All the candidates on the October 2013 PADI IE on Koh Samui in Thailand passed the exams very successfully. There will be a party or two in town tonight!
Well done and congratulations to all of you and thanks to the staff for helping, Nobu and Ami!
