Looking back at another successful dive year; 2013

It was once more a god year for diving and teaching PADI IDC courses. With a total of 10 programs, 49 IDC candidates, 2 IDCS courses, 73 Instructor Specialty courses and 15 EFR Instructor courses taught, it shows more students compared to last year with less programs. This gives a good average.

The year started out with my second biggest IDC to date on Koh Lanta with 10 IDC candidates. To make everything go smoothly, I had two IDCS instructors assist me. Thanks Kevin and Anand!

There were 7 programs in Thailand with 33 candidates and 3 programs on Gili Air in Indonesia with 16 candidates and unfortunately no programs this year in the Philippines. On Malapascua we also saw typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda rage over the small island but all is up and running again.

It was also a special year due the incredible and unprecedented amount of 8 'Certificates of Recognition for Excellence' received from PADI, written by my former candidates and being for the 7th consecutive year a Platinum PADI Course Director!

There were students from 4 countries that I could welcome for the first time; Spain, Seychelles, Czech Republic and Greece.

A big thanks to all the dive centers I could work with this year; PADI 5* IDC Centres 'The Dive Academy' on Koh Samui, 'Blue Planet' on Koh Lanta, 'Haad Yao Divers' on Koh Phangan and 'Sea Dragon' in Khao Lak as well as 'Oceans 5' on Gili Air in Indonesia and thanks to all the candidates that participated in my courses this year.

I'm looking forward to 2014 with a new addition to the team; PADI 5* IDC Centre 'Kiwidiver' on Phuket.

See you all next year.

Transforming lives by becoming a PADI dive instructor

It's not only about transforming the lives of others that you teach, but also your own live. My live has been seriously transformed when I became a diver, even more when I became an instructor and was able to come out to Thailand and live here and it transformed again when I became a PADI Course Director, allowing me to teach around Thailand, in Indonesia, the Philippines and South Korea.

What do you prefer, another day in the office or your office being the ocean?

When is the last time you said; "I wish I spent more time at work"? Being a dive instructor may actually have you state this! It may give you the opportunity to transform your own live and that of your future students and build life long friendships.

If you dream of a career that is unique, challenging, fun and allows you to work in exotic locations, why not look to your favorite hobby – scuba diving!

Have a look at my PADI IDC schedule and see if there's a location and/or time frame that suits you. I have scheduled at least one PADI IDC per month for 2014 and can offer plenty of great locations around the region, always allowing you to dive in the best  local dive conditions these areas provide.

My next PADI IDC is scheduled to start 4th January on Koh Lanta in Thailand, followed by an IDC scheduled to start 21st January on Malapascua in the Philippines, which in turn is followed by a program scheduled to start 5th February in Khao Lak, Thailand and finishing off a flying start into the new year is an IDC scheduled to start 22nd February on Gili Air in Indonesia with plenty more programs at a variety of locations scheduled for the duration of 2014.

Contact me if you would like to receive more information on any of these programs and hope to see you next year!

Hyperbaric chamber on Phuket, Thailand

During my recent visit to Phuket for running a 9km race, I stayed at the Blue Carina Inn hotel, which as it turned out, was located opposite the SSS Hyperbaric Chamber in Phuket! It was early in the morning after the race that I figured this out and they were still closed and since I was on my way to start the November PADI IDC in Khao Lak, so unfortunately I didn't have the opportunity to visit and check out the facilities. Something still on my list of things to do, especially since I know now where they are located.

Hyperbaric chamber in Phuket, Thailand

The sign outside of the hyperbaric chamber

They first opened their doors in 1996 and back in the days it was the first re-compression chamber in Southern Thailand and is now part of a network of 5 facilities in the Kingdom.
The building seems to be located on the premises of the Phuket International Hospital, which gives easy access to medical facilities if required or in case of unexpected emergencies.

Hyperbaric chamber in Phuket, Thailand, entrance

The entrance with a road sign in Thai and English

The Phuket chamber is part of the same SSS recompression chamber network as the hyperbaric or recompression chamber on Koh Samui, where I am a volunteer.

In contrast to the Koh Samui facility, in Phuket they have a 'multi place' re-compression chamber.

If you are visiting Phuket and would like to tour the facility, you are welcome! Chamber tours are free, but they ask that you contact them during normal business hours by phone to arrange an appropriate time to ensure patient treatments are not being conducted. Try 076 209 347 or for emergencies 081 081 9000.

The SSS Network / Phuket Chamber Facility works with the Phuket Diving, Medical, and Rescue communities in a number of ways. They sponsor seminars and training programs on a regular basis to the local dive operators, and host seminars on rescue and dive medicine topics.

One of the courses they offer is the Tender / Operator Course (TOP)

This course provides comprehensive knowledge about the Decompression Illness (DCI) and a complete spectrum of practical skills necessary for the safe chamber operation and inside chamber patient tending.

If you want to expand your general diving knowledge, give them a call and arrange for a tour of the facilities, something I am planning to do in the (near) future.

Once more a 'Certificate of Recognition for Excellence' by PADI, from Gary Wong

This is already the 7th 'Certificate of Recognition for Excellence' that I receive this year from PADI! I think I never had more than 2 in a year before this year! This one comes from Gary Wong, who participated in the October PADI IDC on Koh Samui.

Certificate of Recognition for Excellence from Gary Wong

Maybe it's time for you to see what my PADI IDC's are all about. You have plenty of locations to choose from, with the next program and the first in 2014 starting 4th January on Koh Lanta, Thailand, followed by a program scheduled to start 21st February on Malapascua in the Philippines which in turn is followed by a program scheduled to start 5th February in Khao Lak, Thailand and to finish off a busy start of the year, 22nd February on Gili Air in Indonesia.

Instructor Specialty training in Khao Lak, Thailand

Today and yesterday was reserved for Instructor Specialty training with Jason of the recent PADI IDC in Khao Lak. Yesterday we went for two dives to the Boon sung wreck off Bangsak beach and today we went to Khao Nai Yak for three dives and Andi joined us.

Honeycomb moray eel

The dives at the wreck were very nice and we completed the DUP and Mulitlevel specialties with Jason but at Instructor level
During these dives my friend and fellow PADI Course Director Imad Khashfeh joined us and we both completed the dives on side mount.

Hermit crab

It was a good days diving, nice weather, great dives and plenty of fish to see! It almost was fish soup at the wreck. Various big groups of fish were swimming around and I've never seen so many honeycomb moray eels during a single dive.

Jason

After two long dives, each around an hour, we called it a day and went back to the dive shop where some more briefings and training was waiting for the underwater navigation specialty, which was scheduled for the next day, or rather, today! For this we were joined by Andi, an instructor working at PADI 5* IDC Center Sea Dragon.

Today we had an interesting underwater navigation dive with rather interesting conditions, among other a strong swell had us moving around a bit, the longer the day lasted, the stronger the swell became.
We also completed a Fish ID dive with bot Jason and Andi and an Underwater Naturalist dive with Jason today and both Jason and Andi also completed their Nitrox specialties.

Two busy days of diving but nothing that can't be handled here, with regular trips on the live aboard boats where up to 4 dives per day are scheduled. Tomorrow both Andi and Jason are back to diving and are ready to welcome students and divers!

Tonight is gonna be a good night! Somewhere in Khao Lak there might be a party on.

It was a long day and we had the PADI IE waiting for us the next day (today), but we did complete it and as the picture above shows, we did have some fun as well along the way!

Now it's just one more day before the PADI IE is completed and tomorrow it should be party time! Just one more step to complete; the open water dive!

There are plenty of opportunities for you to start a PADI IDC with me and the EFRI course will be part of the IDC, although there's only one left this year, scheduled to start 8th December in Dauin, Philippines.
For next year things look busy and the first PADI IDC for 2014 is scheduled to start 4th January on Koh Lanta, Thailand followed by a program scheduled to start 21st January in either Dauin or Malapascua in the Philippines.

Next PADI IDC will start 8th December in Dauin, Philippines at PADI CDC Center 'Sea Explorers'

The current PADI IDC in Khao Lak, Thailand hasn't even finished and we're already looking forward to the next IDC program that is scheduled to start 8th December in Dauin, Philippines.

Originally this PADI IDC was scheduled on Malapascua, but due to the damage that typhoon Haiyan / Yolanda caused to the island, we had to move this PADI IDC to a different location, and Dauin just seems to be the right choice and perfect location with all the great teaching facilities that are in place.

Camille's new cooperation with PADI 5* IDC Center Kiwidiver on Phuket

Camille has added a new cooperation for conducting PADI IDC's to his list of PADI 5* IDC Centers he works together with.
As of next year, he will conduct PADI IDC programs in conjunction with PADI 5* IDC Center 'Kiwidiver' in Phuket.

PADI 5* IDC Center Kiwidiver

Sea Explorers PADI IDC moved from Malapascua to Dauin

Due to the impact and damage done by the recent typhoon Haiyan / Yolanda on PADI 5* IDC Center Sea Explorers on Malapascua in the Philippines, the December 2013 and January 2014 PADI IDC's scheduled for Malapascua have been relocated to Sea Explorers' PADI CDC Center in Dauin.

Typhoon Haiyan rages over Malapascua island and wreaks havoc

The typhoon Haiyan / Yolanda that raged over the Philippines also devastated Malapascua island. First accounts mention that 90% of buildings on the island have been wiped out, the good news is that very recent reports have come through stating that no one on the island has been in need of medical help.

Due to the extreme devastation, you can help out the people on Malapascua with donations via this website and there's also a Facebook page 'Help Malapascua'.

The pictures above and below show some of the destruction that has occurred at the island! If you want to get in touch with someone on the island, SMART communications stated that most of their towers should be back up and running within 1-2 days from now, hopefully that will include Malapascua.

Relief efforts by the various dive centers are in full swing and all the roads from Cebu City all the way to Daanbantayan are accessible again.

PADI's new Indonesian regional manager visits Gili Air

This morning, shortly before I left Gili Air in Indonesia for Bali, the new PADI Regional Manager Paul 'Tosh' Tanner visited the island and first stop was PADI 5* IDC Center 'Oceans 5'. During their stay PADI Course Director Sander Buis was handed his first 'Certificate of Recognition for Excellence' as a PADI Course Director. Well done Sander and welcome Tosh!

From left to right; PADI Course Director Sander Buis, PADI Regional Manager for Indonesia Paul 'Tosh' Tanner, PADI Regional Manager for Queensland, Australia Hans Ullrich and myself

It was good meeting the new RM Tosh and as always it was good to meet my long term friend Hans again, we hadn't seen each other for a while.

The next PADI IDC on Gili Air that I will teach is scheduled to start 22nd February 2014. Sander has scheduled an IDC to start later this month at Oceans 5!

PADI Specialty Instructor training on Gili Air in Indonesia

Straight after the October IDC on Gili Air, we started Instructor specialty training with all of the IDC candidates.

Gina, Ramos and Franck had the full Monty packages and Antoine, David and Juri participated in the Nitrox instructor specialty.

After the deep dive yesterday at Shark Point, only Juri is missing in this picture

We did a wide variety of training and the courses included Deep, Dup, Underwater Naturalist, AWARE Fish ID and a fantastic Night dive, which ranks under my all time fave night dives, with lots of Mandarin fish and cockatoo wasp fish just to name a few.
I can't wait until I receive my underwater housing which should be next week, before the start of the next IDC in Khao Lak, Thailand. My fingers are itching to take some underwater pix again!

On the boat on the way out to the dive site, David, myself, Olivier, Gina, Franck and Antoine, picture by Ramos!

During all the dives I also saw a few 'firsts'! This keeps it more than just interesting. This time around I cloud note down; skeleton shrimp and the cockatoo wasp fish. I'm sure there's more to come!
There was also some other mighty cool stuff; white tip reef sharks, bob tail squid, various nudi's, hawksbill turtles almost on every dive and much more to mention.

Max and me after the side mount dives

During all the above mentioned diving, I also did a side mount diver and instructor course with max, who completed his IDC on Gili Air with me last year August.
We had some awesome dives and time flew by, like it does when you have fun! It was good seeing him again and especially on side mount!

Take care folks, next updates will come from Khao Lak in Thailand, just in few days! The IDC starts 17th November there!

Thailand eShark project 01 November 2013 - 30 April 2014

During the recent presentation by Shark Guardian on Gili Air in Indonesia they also mentioned an event that started yesterday!

This event is the 'Thailand eShark project' and runs from yesterday, 1st November 2013 until 30th April 2014.

If possible report all your shark observations to the eShark database, even if no sharks were observed! Every observation counts, whilst snorkeling or diving and also past sightings are of interest, even no sightings of sharks are of interest!

ANYONE that has ever dived or snorkeled in the ocean can participate! All ocean going divers (professionals, recreational, and tourists) are candidates for this survey. The on-line surveys should be filled out after each dive you make – even if you do not see any sharks!

This project deserve all the input we can muster and I hope you all will be actively participating!

It's time to hit the water and get active and report all your observations, happy 'hunting' for data!

Shark Guardian presentation on Gili Air, Indonesia

From many different resources I heard a lot about the 'Shark Guardian' presentations, an initiative by fellow PADI Course Director Brendon Singh.
The presentations are becoming so popular that Brendon and his wife Liz can slowly start making a shift to be their main work and one step that helped was that they are now an officially acknowledged charity in the UK, since July 2013.

Liz and Brandon on Gili Air

The presentation is very informative and even for experienced dive instructors there are plenty of interesting and new pieces of information and knowledge available during the presentation.

The 'shark' family is shown by it's various classifications and plenty of video's and pictures accompany the presentations, which is delivered in a relaxed yet very informative and knowledgeable way.
During the presentation it becomes very obvious how passionate Brendon and Liz are about shark protection and conservation.

A new initiative by Shark Guardian for all divers and professionals in Thailand is the 'eshark' project.
eShark provides a simple way for divers and snorkelers to report the sharks, rays and sawfish they see, and don’t see (zero’s are just as important!), in a way that is used to assess and monitor populations, communities and ecosystems. Most importantly these data are used to assess the need for, and success of marine management initiatives, including sanctuaries.

eShark surveys have been rigorously developed through collaborations with divers, statisticians, biologists and experts in the field of citizen science.

One of the Shark Guardian downloadable flyers or hand outs

Brendon and Liz run this project on a voluntary base and support themselves by selling bits and pieces of merchandise and if you're interested in having a presentation in your dive center, international school or other event, please contact them and they will try their best to find a way to make it happen, It worked in Hong Kong, Brunei and Indonesia, just to name a few, why wouldn't it work at your place?
