PADI Instructor level specialty training on Gili Air in Indonesia during October 2012

Besides participating and completing the recent PADI IDC on Gili Air in Indonesia with PADI 5* IDC Center Oceans 5, the IDC candidates also participated in various instructor level specialty courses.

All four of them, Florence, David, Dan and Paden participated in the Deep-, DUP-, Nitrox- and Emergency Oxygen provider Instructor level specialty courses and Florence and David also participated in the Night Diver Instructor course. Matt, from the August 2012 IDC on Gili Air  left his new work environment on Gili Meno for a few days so he could participate in the Deep Diver Instructor course.

We had some great dive sand enjoyed the relaxed environment of Gili Air and it's enticing dive sites very much! The dive locations visited were Suraya, Simon's, Hans Reef and Oceans 5 House reef. All great locations, each with it's distinctive and specific reason to go there.

The diving around Gili Air is spectacular and I can only urge to come here and check it out. From the big 'stuff' like sharks and occasional Manta Rays and Bumpheads to the small creatures like robust ghost pipefish or bobtail squid, it's all out there to be discovered and found.

Good times were had by all of us and if this appeals to you, I offer Specialty Instructor training after all my IDC programs and as of 2013 I should also be able to offer the (initially only) recreational Side mount diver level and instructor courses and hopefully in the near future also the Tec side mount courses.

The next PADI IDC starts 18th November on Malapascua in the Philippines with PADI 5* IDC center Sea Explorers directly followed by an IDC starting 4th December in Khao Lak in Thailand with PADI 5* IDC Center Seadragon.

Hope to see you there.

It's done and dusted, yeah! The October PADI IDC on Gili Air in Indonesia is done and dusted and is a thing of the past! All performance requirements have been met in the classroom, in confined- and open water. All 4 of them, Florence, David, Dan and Paden are well prepared and I will be very surprised if they would stumble during the exams, I expect them to do very well and pass the exams with high scores!
Another mark reached is that during this program I taught the 350st IDC candidate!

The October 2012 PADI IDC on Gili Air in Indonesia is half way

Time flies when you're having fun and that's definitely the case during this IDC at Oceans 5 on Gili Air, Indonesia. All 4 candidates are strong and s core high scores straight from the beginning on all levels and parts of this IDC.

PADI IDC Skill Circuit Gili Air, Indonesia, alternate air source

David and Dan during an alternate air source skill

We have an easy schedule since we started a few days early but it always helps if you have strong candidates in a group. It's also good to see them help each other out after hours with preparing their presentations.

Florence during the regulator recovery skill

Between plenty of presentations by me, they also need to work on their own presentation for the classroom, confined and open water and to top it off, there are also theory exams lurking in the background and a general standards & procedures needs to be conquered as well.

Paden out of air, what's new?

Today we're tackling a classroom presentation and a confined water presentation by the candidates plus an 800 meter snorkel swim and classroom presentations by me. Tomorrow the 5 theory exams and the first open water dive are on the schedule.

The PADI IDC on Gili Air in Indonesia for October 2012 is in full swing

It's show time again and directly after the recent October Koh Samui IDC I hopped on a plane to Indonesia and for the first time ever I missed a PADI IE on Koh Samui! There's no time for the wicked though and I immediately started to teach a new IDC on Gili Air! That was not before I did a dive straight off the plane! PADI 5* IDC Center Oceans 5 had arranged for a dive trip at the North Eastern point of Lombok, which allowed to hop on their boat, straight out of the airport taxi and dive, before I even set foot on the island this time! I could get used to that!

PADI IDC Gili Air, Indonesia at Oceans 5 the orientation

Paden, Florence, Dan and David during the Orientation presentation of the IDC, 3 days ago

We did a combination of presentations and a couple of dives and today we hit the full on IDC button, although, since we started a few days early, we're already ahead of schedule and it looks like we will have a very relaxed IDC.

PADI IDC Gili Air, Indonesia at Oceans 5 theory exams

Paden, Florence, Dan and David during their theory exams this morning, a little bit less relaxed this time around

More updates on this current IDC will follow and if you're interested in participating in one of my IDC programs, the next IDC is scheduled on Malapascua in the Philippines for 20th November with 5* IDC Center Sea Explorers followed by the last IDC of this year, scheduled to start 4th December in Khao Lak, Thailand with 5* IDC center Seadragon.

Early in 2013 we start again with programs in Koh Lanta and Koh Phangan, check the 2013 schedule here.

PADI IE for October 2012 on Koh Samui 100% success!

The PADI IE on Koh Samui for October 2012 was completed successfully by my candidates from the recent PADI IDC on Koh Samui.
It was the first PADI IE on Koh Samui where I wasn't personally around because of new IDC commitments on Gili Air in Indonesia where I already started a new IDC. Due to internet problems over the last 3 days, I couldn't post an earlier update! Hopefully I will be able to post an update og the new IDC tomorrow.

Exiting the unconscious diver, Yuka in control

It was a good course and it will be strange to not be with them tomorrow during the IE since ........

The next IDC program will start 20th November on Malapascua in the Philippines followed by the last PADI IDC of this year in Khao Lak in Thailand, starting 4th December.

Chaweng Beach Clean Up, sponsored by THA

The Thai Hotel Association or THA, Southern chapter, sponsors each year a beach clean and typically, the Samui dive community goes down to Chaweng Beach for this clean up.

This year we met again this morning 9am!

Chaweng Beach, Koh Samui, Thailand

Before the clean up

Dive center 'The Dive Academy' showed up with their full staff, including Paul, Claire, Callan, Chris and Simon and Eric, Bruce and myself completed this underwater clean up for this year. A slightly lower turn out than usual unfortunately but hopefully more people show up next year!

Unfortunately Claire broke one of her toes before entering the water when she hit a big iron piece on the beach. Get well soon Claire!

Chaweng Beach, Koh Samui, Thailand

After the clean up

We had also 4 people looking after things on land, thanks to Nit, Pim, Mon and Noi!

A lot of trash was collected and we managed to fill 6 big plastic garbage bags with the usual suspects; some snorkel masks, pvc pipes, clothing, shoes, empty bottles, rope, pieces of fishing nets, plenty of fireworks leftovers etc.

There was a separate beach clean up in North Chaweng near the Papillon resort where some 50 hotel staff from hotels located on Chaweng beach participated. Thanks go out to them for coming out and helping!

Chaweng Beach, Koh Samui, Thailand

The garbage bags, full of things we found

Everybody who participated was kind enough to donate his financial reward to Project AWARE, thanks on behalf of Project AWARE guys!

Chaweng Beach, Koh Samui, Thailand

Shrimps during the clean up

Thanks go out to John of THA to make this all possible and especially for the unexpected lunch at Poppies and all other logistical support and Tim Hunt, PADI regional manager for supplying the collection bags!
