Emergency Oxygen Provider Instructor Training, Koh Samui June 2012

Also known as the episode 'Sharif in the pot'. Yesterday we completed training for the Emergency Oxygen Provider Instructor course at the local re-compression chamber in Bang Rak on Koh Samui.
William was on a visa run, so this left Sharif on his own for the course.

Oh no, the pot, get me out of here

We practiced working with the oxygen unit until Sharif understood the skills but what he found more interesting was a tour of the local re-compression chamber.

Assembling the oxygen unit and learning about the appropriate flow rates

Next one up for the course will be William, another participant of the recent Samui IDC. If you're interested in this course, it's part of my IDC's, so come and see me, the next IDC starts 23rd July in Dauin in the Philippines, followed by an IDC kicking off with a prep 17th August on Gili Air in Indonesia and early September sees an IDC on Koh Phangan in Thailand.

You never know what you really have.......until it's gone

You never know what you really have.......until it's gone

The picture below tells it all. We still have nice and healthy corals around the world but the actions we take today will determine the future of these and other marine environments that are imperative to life on Earth. It's important that we are careful with our world wide corals, they are the lungs of the ocean and without lungs we can't breath!

In this respect, National Geographic reported about a study that reveals that some of the sunscreen fluids we use, can damage corals.

The study shows that four commonly found sunscreen ingredients can awaken dormant viruses in the symbiotic algae called zooxanthellae that live inside reef-building coral species.
The chemicals cause the viruses to replicate until their algae hosts explode, spilling viruses into the surrounding seawater, where they can infect neighboring coral communities.

Zooxanthellae provide coral with food energy through photosynthesis and contribute to the organisms' vibrant color. Without them, the coral "bleaches"—turns white—and dies.

The study appeared online in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives.

Please help our corals, don't touch them, don't walk on them, that's small start.
