The Thai Hotel Association or THA, Southern chapter, sponsors each year a beach clean and typically, the Samui dive community goes down to Chaweng Beach
for this clean up
This year we met again this morning 9am!
Before the clean up
Dive center 'The Dive Academy' showed up with their full staff, including Paul, Claire, Callan, Chris and Simon and Eric, Bruce and myself completed this underwater clean up for this year. A slightly lower turn out than usual unfortunately but hopefully more people show up next year!
Unfortunately Claire broke one of her toes before entering the water when she hit a big iron piece on the beach. Get well soon Claire!
After the clean up
We had also 4 people looking after things on land, thanks to Nit, Pim, Mon and Noi!
A lot of trash was collected and we managed to fill 6 big plastic garbage bags with the usual suspects; some snorkel masks, pvc pipes, clothing, shoes, empty bottles, rope, pieces of fishing nets, plenty of fireworks leftovers etc.
There was a separate beach clean up in North Chaweng near the Papillon resort where some 50 hotel staff from hotels located on Chaweng beach participated. Thanks go out to them for coming out and helping!
The garbage bags, full of things we found
Everybody who participated was kind enough to donate his financial reward to Project AWARE
, thanks on behalf of Project AWARE
Shrimps during the clean up
Thanks go out to John of THA to make this all possible and especially for the unexpected lunch at Poppies and all other logistical support and Tim Hunt, PADI regional manager for supplying the collection bags!
