Oxygen Provider Instructor course on Koh Samui

Oxygen Provider Instructor course on Koh Samui

Just before the end of the month, a last update from the recent IDC on Koh Samui. Before the PADI IE started and was successfully completed, Claire also participated in her Emergency Oxygen Instructor course.

Claire attacking the Oxygen cylinder with a wrench, both Claire and the cylinder are fine!

It was a fun course and I hope that Claire will be able to use this Specialty Instructor rating frequently!

Recompression Chamber Technician course in Phuket

Recompression Chamber Technician course in Phuket

The SSS Recompression chamber in Phuket is organizing a Chamber technician course in mid June.

Subaquatic Saftey Systems (SSS) who operate the local DAN affiliated recompression chamber at the Phuket International Hospital has announced another chamber tender/operator course for dive masters and instructors.

This course is extremely valuable for those interested in the medical aspect diving, and the information gained will increase the dive professional’s ability to provide superior assistance in the case of a diver with suspected DCI.

This course also includes a more in depth look at the physics and physiology related to DCI and hyperbarics, plus how to more readily recognize signs and symptoms, and the best way you can treat the injured diver whilst transporting them to the nearest facility or awaiting emergency evacuation.

Much of the course is “hands on” – learning how to perform neurological checks on injured divers; operating a hyperbaric chamber; tending patients inside, and handling emergency scenarios. Every day the course starts with 2 hours of lectures, followed by 2-3 hours of inside and outside chamber operations.

The course will be held over five consecutive evenings (6pm-10pm) from Tuesday 7th of June through to Wednesday 11th of June, followed by training during 5 real treatments.

The course is 10,000.- THB including manual, chamber use and gasses. This course is registered under Technical Diving Int’l and upon completing the 5 treatments; candidates can request certification as TDI Chamber Operator.

For more info and contact go here.

Koh Samui, Chaweng Beach underwater clean up

Koh Samui, Chaweng Beach underwater clean up

Yesterday Chaweng Beach underwent an underwater clean in conjunction with the THA (Thai Hotel Association) and TAT (Tourist Authority of Thailand).
Divers associated with GIDOA participated and about 10 divers hit the water. I was diving with Claire who's participating in the current IDC. In order to be able to participate in the clean up we took a morning off from classes!

Samui's Mayor, Khun Ramnet Jaikwang was present at the clean up

One would expect a lot of garbage and other assorted trash near the beach, due to the recent flooding. A strange thing occurred though, my usual garbage 'hunting grounds' at Chaweng Beach seem to have been gone, it looks like all the sand that went missing on Chaweng's beach during the floods, has been spread out over the ocean floor as a big blanket.

A sun bathing chair, too heavy to lift out by oneself

The only thing that I found yesterday were the sun deck chair, pictured above which was too big for me to take out, an iron structure, pictured below and plenty of new bottles. No old tyres and other rubbish was anywhere to be seen! A very strange phenomena.

The iron structure that Claire and me barely managed to get out of the water

Between a group of 5 divers we just about managed to fill 1 big garbage bag, where usually one person is able to fill such a bag on it's own. It unfortunately$ doesn't mean that the beach is cleaner, in my opinion the garbage is just covered under a layer of sand and still out there, just out of view.

An octopus in a very clean, brand new bottle.

The bottle above with the octopus in it, shows how clean the bottle are that we found, there's hardly any marine life on it, in contract to previous finds here.

All in all an interesting dive and I'm sure that there are more bigger items out there like the sun bathing chair.

PADI IDC on Koh Samui for May is on it's way

The last couple of days the current PADI IDC on Koh Samui in conjunction with The Dive Academy has kicked off and me and Claire have sailed through he prep course and are waiting now to be joined by 4 more Japanese candidates; Yuki, Hirotaka, Kikuko and Shinya.

The skill circuit was on the schedule and is now out of the way, as can be seen, the pool had excellent visibility!

Theory exams were one of the joys Claire underwent during the prep course.

Updates on this IDC will be available soon, so stay tuned!

If you're interested in participating in one of my PADI IDC's, the next one is scheduled to start on Gili Air in Indonesia, starting 16th June followed by an additionally scheduled IDC starting 1st July on Koh Samui again and than an IDC in Osan, South Korea, starting 20th July, just to be followed by another IDC on Koh Samui, starting 7th August. PADI IE on Gili Trawangan in Indonesia another 100% success rate for Camille's candidates

The recent PADI IE held on Gili Trawangan in Indonesia from the recent IDC on Gili Air in conjunction with Oceans 5 was a big success for Camille's and Oceans 5 candidates, all three passed with flying colors!

From left to right Cécile, Anna, Simone, Phil who completed his IDCS course and Camille

PADI Examiner was George Wegmann who's not in this picture.

Well done girls, guess that's going to a bit of a party tonight! Thanks to Sander for taking care of so many things. See you soon again in June!

Diving Gili Air, Indonesia part 3; Teluk Nara on Lombok

Diving Gili Air, Indonesia part 3; Teluk Nara on Lombok

And now for something completely different; muck diving! After the first dive on Gili Air at Oceans' 5 House reef and the two awesome dives at Shark Point and Soraya, my last dive was a muck dive at the Bounty Harbour at Teluk Nara, the kick off point for boats to Gili Air. It's just a 20 minute boat ride away from Ocean's 5 and Gili Air.

Short fin lion fish (another first for me)

The moment we dropped I immediately felt at home, since it reminded me to a degree of Chaweng Beach, I do a lot of muck diving there as well! Teluk Nara has a lot more interesting creatures to offer though!

Cackatoo Waspfish (once more a first!)

There's lots of trash and if you go deeper, around 8 to 15 meters, you need really good buoyancy since otherwise you kick up the fine sand or muck and all visibility is out the window!

How about this little nudi branch, a Janolus sp, an un-described one, as of yet

Two juvenile sweet lips in one picture

On a regular base you may be able to spot and see a juvenile sweet lip and it's erratic behavior. Here at Teluk Nara's Bounty harbor, I lost track of how many I saw, at least 10, probably a few more! This picture almost had three of them in it but at the last moment the 3rd one made a u-turn just before he got in the frame.

A lovely Tawny Seahorse

Banded pipe fish, there was a nice pair of them trying to avoid my camera

A great shot of a scorpion fish, in case you can spot him

Some small cleaner shrimps

I can only repeat myself by saying how much I enjoyed the diving around the Gili Islands and I'm looking forward to start the next IDC in mid June on Gili Air with Oceans 5, this will give me more opportunities to dive a bit more and explore more dive sites.

Diving Gili Air, Indonesia part 2; Shark Point and Soraya

Diving Gili Air, Indonesia part 2; Shark Point and Soraya

After yesterday report on Oceans 5 House Reef, today a report of the more challenging and spectacular sites of Shark Point near Gili Trawangan and Soraya near Gili Meno, the other two Gili islands.
The first 5 pictures are from Shark Point and the last three originate from Soraya. A few 'firsts' were spotted by me during these two dives.

During the Shark Point dive I conducted the DUP Specialty at Instructor level with Anna, Cécile, Simone and Ruben and both dives were conducted on Nitrox.
We went to about 27-28 meters and drifted nicely along the reef, at the deepest point we spotted two white tip reef sharks but they were a bit too far off to take pictures.

A leafy scorpion fish (first time I see this fish!)

A blue ribbon eel, who completely came out of his hole and turned out to be about a meter long, another first for me

Octopus

Sea fan

Ruben and Cécile during the safety stop

The next three pictures were taken at Soraya, a dive during which Ruben completed his Fish ID Instructor Specialty. Soraya are lovely 'valleys' that you can follow, in the drift and has some very beautiful and healthy coral!

A flathead crocodile fish, a big one to boost and the first time I've seen one. This was fantastic to see, such a strange creature!

Hawks bill turtle

A group of sea fans

Two great dives which I really enjoyed and I can wait to be back again come mid June to get some more dives logged around the Gili's.

Diving Gili Air, Indonesia; Oceans 5 house reef

Diving Gili Air, Indonesia; Oceans 5 house reef

As the name says, this is a local dive site literally just in front of PADI 5 Star IDD Resort Oceans 5 dive center on Gili Air where I just conducted an IDC.

The dive site is around the local harbor and the first thing you see when disembarking from a boat on Gili Air is Oceans 5! The site is easy to access, just a 10 meters walk from the shop and is easy to dive, fairly shallow and good for training and night dives but besides these conveniences, the site also has some great underwater life to explore and there were a few 'firsts' during my stay on Gili Air!

Razor fish

This dive I did with Simone and we completed the Instructor Underwater Naturalist specialty during this dive.

Porcelain crab

Frog fish, a big one!

Frog fish showing it's teeth

Flying gurnard, a first for me

Banded snake eel on the hunt

A real nice dive and easy and convenient and this was just the start for more interesting and exciting dives later during my stay. Posts with more pictures of the other sites will follow in due time, so stay tuned to this channel.

PADI Emergency Oxygen Instructor course on Gili Air, Indonesia with Oceans 5

PADI Emergency Oxygen Instructor course on Gili Air, Indonesia with Oceans 5

From left to right, Ruben, Cécile, Anna, Simone and Phil

Besides Phil and the 3 girls of the IDC, we also had Ruben join us, a Spanish instructor who works on Gili Air.

It was all good fun and informative and soon I will write a piece and have some pictures of the local dives sites here and the Specialty Instructor training that we completed.

The PADI IDC on Gili Air in Indonesia for April 2011 is in the bag!

The PADI IDC on Gili Air in Indonesia for April 2011 is in the bag!

Two days ago already, the first IDC with Oceans 5 on Gili Air in Indonesia has been bagged. Due to hard work (Instructor Specialty training) and limited internet access I couldn't update my blog before today.

This IDC has been great fun and the facilities at Oceans 5 are fantastic when it comes down to teaching. Especially the 25 meter long, custom build swimming pool is fab! Sander and Simone are doing a great job out here!

Anna during one of her Knowledge Development presentations

As usual it was an international affair with Camille; Anna is from Germany, Cécile is from France and Simone is from the Netherlands. Phil, who completed his IDCS course is from the UK.

Rescue exercise # 7 in the ocean

Diving around the Gili islands is also a treat, during the specialty instructor training we had fantastic dives and an update will follow soon.

Open Water training; free descent with reference

We completed training in the classroom, the candidates presented knowledge development, confined and open water presentations, theory exams and a General Standards & Procedures exam was administered and plenty of workshops were given; control, descents, rescue, DSD etc.

Open Water training, Jamal is clearing his mask

For me it was interesting since this was the first time that I taught an OWSI program, all 4 candidates where already Assistant Instructor before they started the IDC part that I conducted. We did throw in some additional training though but Sander did a real good job preparing them.

Good food, good times, lunch break during the IDC

The PADI IE will be conducted on 10th and 11th May and the three girls, Anna, Cécile and Simone will participate, Jamal will need to work more on his theoretical knowledge before he can confidently go into an IE, we're aiming at the next IDC on Gili Air during June for Jamal to take his exam.

If you're interested in participating in one of my PADI IDC's, the next one is scheduled to start on Koh Samui, an IDC is starting there 12th May, followed by the second IDC on Gili Air, starting 16th June followed by an additionally scheduled IDC starting 1st July on Koh Samui again and than an IDC in Osan, South Korea, starting 20th July. A busy schedule ahead so don't miss out!
